WHAT IS  DAMASCENING ?

DAMASCENING IS AN ARTISANAL TECHNIQUE THAT CONSISTS OF INLAYING FINE WIRES OF GOLD, SILVER, OR COPPER ONTO A METAL SURFACE—USUALLY STEEL—TO CREATE INTRICATE DECORATIVE PATTERNS.
THE RESULT OF THIS INLAY WORK IS KNOWN AS DAMASQUINURE.

THIS TECHNIQUE, HIGHLY VALUED IN MOROCCO, IS PRACTICED EXCLUSIVELY IN THE CITY OF MEKNES. IT HAS TRADITIONALLY BEEN USED TO ADORN STIRRUPS, SWORDS, AND OTHER OBJECTS, AS WELL AS TO DECORATE PLATES, VASES, AND JEWELRY.

TODAY, THIS ANCIENT ART IS A HERITAGE CRAFT AT RISK OF DISAPPEARING. MEKNES REMAINS ONE OF THE LAST PLACES IN THE WORLD WHERE A FEW MASTER ARTISANS (MAALEMS) STILL KEEP THE TRADITION ALIVE—ONLY NINE MASTERS REMAIN, AND WE ARE PROUD TO BE AMONG THEM.

Frequently Asked Questions

About the Craft

Is this item really handmade?
Yes. Every piece is made entirely by hand in Morocco using the ancient silver damascene technique. No machines, molds, or mass production are involved. Each silver line is individually inlaid into steel.
Are you the artisan or a reseller?
I am the artisan. I come from a family of damascene masters. I personally create or oversee each piece using techniques passed down through generations.
Is this technique rare?
Yes. Today, there are only nine artisans left worldwide who still practice authentic silver damascene entirely by hand. This art dates back to the 14th century and is considered endangered.

Creation & Authenticity

How long does it take to make one piece?
Depending on the design, each piece takes several weeks to complete. The process is slow by nature and cannot be rushed without compromising the craft.
Will my piece look exactly like the photos?
Each piece is handmade, so no two are ever identical. Small variations are natural and are part of what makes your piece unique and authentic.

Gifting & Meaning

Is this suitable as a gift?
Absolutely. These pieces are often chosen as meaningful gifts for weddings, anniversaries, housewarmings, or collectors. They carry history, symbolism, and craftsmanship beyond decoration.

Care & Shipping

How do I care for my damascene piece?
Simply wipe gently with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid water, chemicals, or abrasive materials to preserve the silver inlay and steel finish.
Do you ship internationally?
Yes. I ship worldwide with careful, protective packaging to ensure your piece arrives safely.
